Would a fear of public speaking hinder my chance of succeeding in Public Relations?

public speaking
Leah S asked:

I am a college sophomore studying Public Relations and although I consider myself an excellent writer, an outgoing person and extremely creative, I am not the best public speaker. I know those in P.R. are often required to address the press but is having a fear a public speaking enough of a reason to change my career path? I’m articulate but I have the hardest time not sounding like a fumbling mess when adressing a crowd. THANKS!

What’s the best way to reduce my fear of public speaking?

Ever since I moved to the US, I’ve had a tremendous fear of public speaking. Almost 10 years later, this fear is still hunting me–shaping my life as I try to avoid it.

I’m a member of a local Toastmasters club. The practice does help. But for some reason, the fear is still there. Since I started, I’ve become so accustomed to the audience there, that it stopped being a challenge. However, every time I even think about speaking at work, my hands would sweat.

I know how important it is for my future to reduce the fear.
However, there are so many methods out there that I’m just confused at this point as to which one I should try. If you have personal experience in this area, please let me know what is the best way to reduce this fear. Thank you

Why are so many people afraid of public speaking?

The only reason I can think of is that they lack confidence or fear criticism. I don’t see why this should hinder them, though, since criticism is a generally a good thing. If so many people lack confidence, then is the matter cultural and not personal?
