How to rebound from a bad public speaking appearence?

For example, when I came into the auditorium after being announced, there was complete silence, no polite applause, nothing. (They applauded for the other speakers when they came out–one of them from the state division of the exact same program I was representing), A man and woman in the audience kept rolling their eyes, etc. When I opened the floor to questions, more silence.
Any ideas about why an audience would react this way, and how I can get back on track?
